JANUARY 2003: John Prescott launches building work on the new £20 million Village Centre development. The first building to be constructed is a childcare centre.

JANUARY 2003: Resident Bill James wins a by-election to join the Board of Preston Road Neighbourhood Development Co.

APRIL 2003: Snapshot 2003, featuring the latest results of residents’ surveys into regeneration progress, published.

APRIL 2003: First-ever Preston Road Community Celebration held, to commemorate unsung heroes on the Estate.

APRIL 2003: Preston Road NDC ballots residents on whether the company should become involved in the housing issue for the first time, following the rejection of Council plans for demolitions on the estate.

JUNE 2003: Solution Centre, Preston Road, closes down. New accommodation, Employment House, opens at Southcoates Lane for Preston Road Works!, Community Paramedic, Business Development and Community Funding. Craven Lea Community House, Endeavour Crescent, reopens after refurbishment.

JULY 2003: Hull City Council begins building its £1.3 million Family Resource Centre at the Village Centre site.

JULY 2003: 1000-strong digital network achieved with that number of computers installed into homes across the Estate.

AUGUST 2003: Preston Road Carnival 2003 becomes most successful ever, with around 2000 people attending. Event celebrates the 21st anniversary of the Preston Road Community Centre.

AUGUST 2003: First open-air concert staged - Noisefest - at the Trax Park.

SEPTEMBER 2003: Alex Norman joins as first Business Enterprise Director, to advise projects on social enterprise status.

SEPTEMBER 2003: Work begins at the Village Centre on the first new-build police station in Hull for 20 years. Construction also begins on first retail unit.

OCTOBER 2003: John Hadland Park is opened at St John's Grove in memory of a resident director. His widow Christine and the Lord Mayor of Hull launch the £250,000 facility.

OCTOBER 2003: Estate bobby John Legard named Humberside Police Community Policeman of the year 2003.

OCTOBER 2003: Wire IT becomes an internet cafe and HERCU (credit union) cash-in point.

OCTOBER 2003: Preston Road Motorbike Club video premiered at Hull Short Film Festival.

NOVEMBER 2003: Foredyke Primary School earns glowing Ofsted report, three years after going into ‘special measures’.

DECEMBER 2003: Inaugural community learning awards staged to celebrate resident achievement.

DECEMBER 2003: Latest annual report published - the first designed by a resident.
