- Introduction
- The role
- “Talk Shops”
- The co-ordinator
Introduction:
The Street Champion project we operate was transformed from the Preston Road focus group project in March 2007 and it allows residents either tenants, home owners or lease holders of the Preston Road Estate to report issues that are concerning them in their street or neighbourhood. In effect they are an extra pair of eyes to help make the Preston Road estate a “Cleaner, Greener and Safer” place to live.
Our aim is to engage with as many residents from the Preston Road estate and to give them an extra arena/channel where they can raise issues.
The role of the Street Champion:
- Is to raise issues or problems that are affecting their street or neighbourhood, these issues can cover footpaths, highways, green spaces, neighbourhood management and community safety besides others
- The Street Champions can be asked to fill in questionnaires to give their views on different services being delivered in the area
- The Street Champions also feed back information to family, friends and other residents who are not Street Champions
The level of involvement is left entirely up to the Individual Street Champion and there is no minimum amount that they have to deliver
Please note:
- The Street Champions are not required to act as informers or spies (If this became an issue there are other agencies, i.e. Community Safety that the Street Champion Co-ordinator would signpost to)
- The Street Champions are not required to undertake any physical activity such as patrolling the streets or cleaning etc (unless they do so voluntarily)
“Talk Shops”
These are an important part of the Street Champion Project they are held bi-monthly and are very user friendly, they are designed to give Street Champions the opportunity to meet with Key Agency Contacts and raise issues that may be concerning them. It also gives Key Agency Contacts the opportunity to update the Street Champions on the work they are doing in the area. The “Talk shops” they are run on a question and answer basis,
The co-ordinators role:
The Street Champion co-ordinator acts as a central contact for all issues raised by the Street Champions, including highways, fly-tipping, litter, graffiti, community safety etc and feeds these issues/concerns to whoever it concerns and provides feedback whenever possible including feedback where nothing can be done and the reason why.
For confidentiality reasons we do not publicise the names of the Street Champions in any type of publication, i.e. reports, but the Street Champions themselves are within their right to make it known to others that they are undertaking this role.
