Projects - Expressive Arts

Expressive Arts

The Expressive Arts Project encourages local people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to try something new and express themselves in activities such as music, dance and drama.

It provides opportunities for people to become involved in a range of creative activities, significantly different from traditional workshops and classes, that will help to enrich leisure time or prepare for going on into further learning and employment.

No skill or expertise is necessary to join an activity as they are designed to draw out individual skills and talents through the enjoyment of working with others, as well as through the support given during supervision, consultation and mentoring.

The Expressive Arts staff offer opportunities to develop:

  • how we express ourselves and present ourselves to others
  • how we view the world around us and how we interpret what we see
  • how we are able to modify atmosphere, mood and emotion
  • how we bring together different creative skills
  • our accuracy and control of our bodies, voice and expression
  • our personal qualities of imagination, exploration and intuition
  • our ideas by experimenting, reviewing and refining our work

Specific work-related activities offered are:

  • Confidence building
  • Research skills
  • Speech training
  • Application form writing
  • Computer skills
  • Interview coaching

Lap-top computers are available for users to become involved in, for example, script-writing or other documentation, whilst video conferencing facilities enable the sharing of new ideas, linking with other communities and artists in Europe and beyond.

The project also brings families, as well as volunteers, together in accessible theatrical and musical productions during after-school and holiday clubs. Open-air performance is possible using our unique indoor/outdoor performance space.

The Expressive Arts building, situated within the Preston Road Village Centre, is open during daytimes, evenings and Saturdays throughout the year.
