The award-winning Freedom Centre has long been the aspiration of residents of the Preston Road Estate. Bringing together public services in a modern setting was high on the list of priorities when the area was awarded New Deal for Communities’ status by the Government in 2000. The aim was to provide the community with the resources to transform their neighbourhood over a 10-year period.

The Preston Road Neighbourhood Development Company (PRNDC) was set up to run the regeneration scheme and, after a tendering process, appointed the Hull-based Sewell Group to be a partner in building the Village Centre on six acres of derelict land.

Work started on the Freedom Centre in May 2004 and since opening in December 2005, it has played host to numerous events such as carnivals, children's talent contests, schools' carol service and pantomines. The Centre has also been visited by the Princess Royal. Conferencing facilities, meeting areas and training rooms have also proven very popular at the Centre

The Freedom Centre won the Community Benefit category of the Yorkshire Renaissance Awards 2006, organised by Yorkshire Business Insider magazine. The judges praised the involvement of local residents in developing the Freedom Centre. It was the second year running that this was awarded to the Preston Road Village Centre in 2005.
