Recent Successes
Previous successes have included the planning and development of new local, accessible health facilities through the NHS treatment centre on Preston Road. The Treatment Centre, only the second of its kind in the city, allows people to access emergency advice and care from qualified practitioners.
People are given help, advice and treatment for ailments and minor injuries from 1-5pm, Monday to Friday. Other advice and information is available by ringing (01482) 344580.
Sexual health for young people
This project worked with young people 11 – 19 yrs. The NDC part funded this, as a local programme, until March 2007 when the Hull Teaching PCT decided to offer the service citywide. The project aims to educate young people on all aspects of sexual health and relationship issues. The project has various drop in sessions and the service includes: access to the pill, emergency contraception (up to 75hrs), condoms, free pregnancy testing, screening for sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea, sexual health information, support and advice. For confidential help and advice, contact Pat Farley on 07919 544075 or (01482) 335700.
Support Not Pills:
The NDC funded a local health worker, Sue Morland, to support people who suffer from anxiety, stress and depression, where the contributing factors may be social issues i.e. debt etc. Sue can provide you with advice, information and support to ensure that you can get the right help for your problems. Locally, Sue has sessions within the new NHS Treatment Centre and Marfleet Group Practice, however these are accessed on a referral only basis, from either your G.P or Primary Care Mental Health Worker. Sue is available for initial advice on (01482) 344957, (01482) 344580 or (01482) 701834.
Building a Healthy School Community project
A specialist team of School Health Practitioners worked within the Preston Road/Greatfield area secondary schools. Their aim was to offer a variety of healthy relationship programmes e.g domestic violence issues, focussed at young people which were accessed through Breakfast Club drop ins and curriculum based learning. The Hull Teaching PCT now offer some of these services citywide.
First Responder Scheme
Local volunteer residents were trained to support the paramedic services within the area at the scene of accidents. Preston Road NDC were able to negotiate support and management of these services for the future with St Johns Ambulance
