The Horticulture Centre offers a wide range of training at various levels. Would you be intrested in working in a Nursery or Market gardening? Would you like to learn more about and obtain nationally recognised qualifications in Horticulture? Are you keen keen on working with plants and enjoy all types of weather? Then we have the course to suit your needs to you.

NVQ Level 1 Horticulture

No formal entry requirements, 1 year (13 hours per week)
This course covers the basics in Horticulture including Health and Safety, effective working relationships, propgating plants (including seed sowing), establishing and maintaining plants, introduction to pests and diseases, maintaining equipment and machines.
Progression to Level 2 Horticulture, Employment.


Training at the Horticulture CentreNVQ Level 2 Horticulture

Entry based on experience of student or NVQ Level 1, 1 year (13 hours per week)
This course covers more advanced skills in Horticulture including Health and Safety, effective working relationships, preparing indoor areas, establishing and maintaining the growth and development of nursery stock through all aspects of development.
Progression to Level 3 Horticulture, Employment in Horticulture, e.g parks, gardens,
nursery work and market gardening

NVQ Level 3 Horticulture

This is a general qualifcation from City and Guilds, which covers several fields of work. You will be studying nursery stock and plant production. 2 years (13 hours per week). This course covers effective working relationships, health, safety and security, preparing sites, growth and development of crops, pests, disease and disorder- management. growing media preparation, team leading, customer service, stock management, planning, implementing and managing work schedules and monitoring programmes.
Progression to courses in Higher Education. Employment and opportunity to work at supervisory level after a short time.

Where are the courses taught?

The courses are taught at the East Hull Centre For Horticulture (which is on the number 42 bus route). This is a commercial nursery and therefore an ideal place to train for an NVQ. Classes are taught by experienced and qualified horticulturists.
